Jay’s dive changes its purpose

Jay enters the water with unfinished family business, rather than on a mission to confront a creature. Becoming trapped with roughly an hour of air transforms what he needs to achieve immediately. That is the survival-thriller premise: his situation and reason for diving provide enough context. The way he responds to the danger remains something to discover in the film.

Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin and the father–son connection

Abrams plays Jay, while Brolin plays his father, Mitt Gardiner. Their relationship supplies a second axis alongside the physical danger. His father’s lessons belong to the past Jay carries with him; this introduction does not explain how he uses them. The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. Brian Duffield directs and shares the screenplay with Daniel Kraus.

Daniel Kraus’s novel and the film adaptation

The film adapts Whalefall, Kraus’s novel published in 2023. Reading it first is optional: choosing print or cinema as your introduction is a preference rather than a continuity requirement. Afterwards, compare how prose expresses Jay’s thoughts with how performance, space and sound can communicate an experience on screen, without requiring the two formats to operate identically.

Approaching its combination of grief and survival

The starting appeal combines a specific physical predicament with a relationship that does not simply disappear because Jay is alone underwater. If confined-space tension and a character-focused story interest you, that pairing helps identify the film. Approach it as fiction adapted from a novel, rather than as a diving manual or a documentary reconstruction. Its premise is an invitation to follow Jay’s predicament, not practical survival instruction.
