Watch order

Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and El Camino: a spoiler-free watch order

For a first watch, start with Breaking Bad, continue with El Camino and finish with Better Call Saul. Here is how that route differs from strict chronology, without revealing the connections.

The recommended first-watch route

Watch all five seasons of Breaking Bad in their normal episode order. Follow them with El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, then watch all six seasons of Better Call Saul. Keeping each work together gives you a straightforward route without pausing to consult scene lists or switching between different sets of unresolved questions.

This is our editorial recommendation by complete works, not a literal release-order list. Better Call Saul was already running when El Camino arrived. Placing the film directly after Breaking Bad keeps that continuation close to the story it follows; saving Saul for the final block gives its own characters and conflicts room to develop.

What each part contributes

Breaking Bad introduces Walter White and the criminal world around Albuquerque. It is the entry point used in this guide. Better Call Saul shifts the focus to Jimmy McGill and the legal profession. It shares a setting and connections with the original series, but approaching it purely as a hunt for familiar faces overlooks the separate story you are starting.

El Camino follows Jesse Pinkman’s journey beyond Breaking Bad. That relationship is why we place it after the complete original series rather than treating it as an unrelated crime film. A streaming service may display it in a movie collection, but the catalogue layout is not an indication that prior context is unnecessary.

Why the prequel does not create a simple chronological order

Much of Better Call Saul takes place before Breaking Bad, but the show also uses other time periods. Watching the entire prequel first therefore does not place every scene in fictional date order. The label tells you about its main setting, not a rule that covers every part of the series.

A strict chronological edit would require stopping and rearranging material within episodes. That changes when information becomes available and can reveal connections earlier than intended. On a first watch, we recommend preserving the episode structure. Once you know the complete stories, comparing their timelines can be a separate way to revisit them.

Should you alternate the two shows?

We do not recommend alternating seasons for a first watch. There is no matching rule in which the second season of one show corresponds to the second season of the other. Switching also means putting one set of developing relationships on hold while you learn or resume another.

If you have already finished Breaking Bad, you can continue with the film and then Saul without restarting. If you began with Saul, this guide does not require you to stop in the middle of an episode. Choose a comfortable pause and decide whether you want to complete the original series first. There is no need to memorise every shared character before choosing a route.

Jimmy McGill, Saul Goodman and the prequel’s cast

Bob Odenkirk plays Jimmy McGill and Saul Goodman. These are not separate lead characters whose stories you need to find as parallel shows: the names belong to one character’s path through this universe. Better Call Saul puts him at the centre and develops his own professional surroundings.

Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan lead the prequel’s creative team, with Jonathan Banks and Rhea Seehorn among its cast. Shared faces do not create a set of required scenes to alternate with Breaking Bad. Our recommended route preserves Saul’s six seasons as a complete work instead of reducing them to explanations of appearances in another series.

Quick questions before you start

Do you need Better Call Saul to understand Breaking Bad? No; begin with the original story. Is El Camino the first film to watch before either show? We would not use it as an introduction because it continues an established character’s path. Can you skip to the crossover episodes? This route keeps the complete episode order instead of labelling chapters as disposable.
