Severance: how to start and understand the Lumon premise without spoilers

Start with Severance season 1. Understand the Lumon premise, identify the creator and cast, and see how many episodes are in the first two seasons without revealing identities or twists.

Start with Good News About Hell

Begin with Good News About Hell, season 1, episode 1, originally released on February 18, 2022. Its listed running time is 57 minutes. Continue in numbered episode order: Severance is not an anthology of independent stories, and its second season follows the first season’s continuing narrative.

If a regional catalogue uses a translated title, look for the series starring Adam Scott and set around Lumon Industries. No prerequisite book or companion material is needed. The opening episode introduces the rules you need; the mystery concerns what those rules mean.

Lumon and the work-memory divide

Mark Scout, played by Adam Scott, leads a team at Lumon Industries. Its employees have undergone a procedure separating work memories from their personal lives. The work self does not have the same context as the outside self: that distinction is the starting point before any more elaborate explanation.

The terms innie and outie distinguish the inside and outside experiences. They do not mean two actors playing twins or an instruction to reorganise scenes around separate characters. A memory boundary turns the everyday idea of switching off from work into questions about identity and consent. Lumon’s purpose and the answers to the mystery are deliberately outside this introduction.

The creator, director and ensemble cast

Dan Erickson created and writes the series. Ben Stiller is a director and executive producer, rather than the actor playing Mark. If you arrived searching for “Ben Stiller’s series”, that distinction helps identify the show: Adam Scott is its lead performer.

The ensemble includes Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Patricia Arquette, Tramell Tillman and Christopher Walken. We identify the performers without disclosing their characters’ hidden connections or identities. Approach the show as a continuing ensemble story inside and outside a workplace, rather than a set of standalone employee assignments.

Season 1: nine episodes beginning in February 2022

The first season contains nine episodes. It launched on February 18, 2022 with two instalments, followed by weekly Friday releases. For a watch now, follow episodes 1 through 9: that double launch does not make the second instalment optional or indicate a separate pilot film.

Good News About Hell is the opening episode’s title, not a prequel. The complete season establishes Mark and the team’s situation. If your app promotes season 2 first, change the season selector before starting; numbered episodes are a better guide than the order of promotional tiles.

Season 2: ten episodes in the same continuing story

The second season has ten episodes. It began on January 17, 2025 and released a new episode each Friday through March 21. Those are original premiere dates, not an announcement of an upcoming weekly run. Together, the first two seasons contain nineteen episodes.

Stiller directs five episodes in season 2, alongside directors Uta Briesewitz, Sam Donovan and Jessica Lee Gagné. Different directors do not create separate viewing branches: these episodes belong to the same numbered sequence. This guide does not assign a premiere to future instalments or treat a renewal as a confirmed release date.

A practical starting session and where to watch

Allow about an hour to try the opening episode. To continue, calculate the nine-episode block and then the ten-episode block using their individual running times; do not multiply every instalment by the pilot’s 57 minutes. The viewing planner can calculate one stretch at a time.

Severance is an Apple TV series. Check your country’s listing for language and access options. Before joining a discussion, establish the last episode you have finished: the work-self and outside-self distinction is the premise, while its consequences are part of the unfolding mystery.
