Battlestar Galactica: viewing order

Two continuities to keep separate: the original series and Galactica 1980, or the reimagining that begins with the 2003 miniseries. See where Razor, The Plan, Caprica and Blood & Chrome fit.

Choose a continuity

The miniseries and four seasons form the main route. Films and prequels expand that same continuity.

First visit without jumps

Begin with the miniseries. Keep Razor after season three and The Plan after the finale; leave prequels as expansions.

  1. MiniseriesReleased: 2003

Battlestar Galactica: miniseries, parts 1 and 2

The reimagining’s starting point. Find both parts even if the catalogue separates them from season one.

  2. SeasonReleased: 2004

    Battlestar Galactica: season 1

Continue after the miniseries; 33 opens the regular series. The year indicates its first original broadcast.

  3. SeasonReleased: 2005

    Battlestar Galactica: season 2

Follow the season sequence. Razor later returns to part of this period.

  4. SeasonReleased: 2006

    Battlestar Galactica: season 3

Third season of the reimagining; do not mix it with Galactica 1980.

  5. Its recommended position retains the release context despite returning to an earlier period.

    FilmReleased: 2007Optional

    Battlestar Galactica: Razor

A film partly set during season two, with flashbacks to other periods. It was released after season three.

  6. SeasonReleased: 2008

    Battlestar Galactica: season 4

The regular series’ final season, published across 2008 and 2009.

  7. FilmReleased: 2009Optional

    Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

A revisit of earlier events from another perspective, rather than a sequel simply set after the final episode.

  8. Watch the pilot once, whether separate or included in the season.

    SpecialReleased: 2009Optional

    Caprica: pilot

The pilot had a separate 2009 release. If your Caprica season includes it at the beginning, do not replay it as a different work.

    SeriesReleased: 2010Optional

Caprica: the rest of the season after the pilot

Continue with the episodes after the pilot. Both blocks make up Caprica’s single season.

  9. MiniseriesReleased: 2012Optional

    Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

A prequel first published as ten web instalments in 2012 and assembled as a television film in 2013. Choose one edition rather than counting both as different stories.

Choose which Galactica first

The 1978 Battlestar Galactica and the reimagining launched in 2003 share a starting premise and familiar names, but they are not successive seasons of one story. The classic route connects the 1978 series with Galactica 1980. The reimagined route starts afresh with its miniseries and continues through four seasons.

You do not need to finish the original before starting the modern version. Check the year and cast on the listing you open: Lorne Greene identifies the classic Adama; Edward James Olmos identifies the reimagined one. Identical titles in two catalogues do not guarantee the same version.

The miniseries is the start, not a recap

The 2003 miniseries establishes the situation from which the regular series begins. Watch both parts before season one. Some apps list it separately or among specials; starting directly with the episode 33 is not equivalent to seeing that beginning.

For a first visit, we suggest the miniseries, seasons one to three, Razor, season four and The Plan. Caprica and Blood & Chrome follow as expansions. This recommendation preserves an order of discovery; a prequel taking place earlier does not automatically make it the best starting point.

Why Razor and The Plan need a note

Razor returns to a period within season two and also uses earlier flashbacks. It was released after season three. Our recommended route retains that publication position so you do not need to skip episodes, mute dialogue or find an altered edit.

The Plan revisits earlier events from another perspective but was published after the main series ended. An early position on a timeline can reveal information that the main narrative withholds. On a first watch, we recommend leaving it until after season four. The chronological route groups these overlaps rather than inventing an exact point between scenes.

Caprica and Blood & Chrome are earlier branches

Caprica takes place decades before the reimagining and explores an earlier stage of that society. Blood & Chrome follows an earlier period in William Adama’s life. Both belong to the modern continuity, rather than the gap between the 1978 series and Galactica 1980.

Format differences explain some catalogue discrepancies: Caprica’s pilot appeared in 2009 and its television series followed in 2010. Blood & Chrome was released in web instalments in 2012 and as a television film in 2013. The cards preserve those distinctions so you do not count the same story twice when finding another edition.

Scope and limits of the map

This selection includes the two classic series and, in the reimagining, the miniseries, four seasons, Razor, The Plan, the Caprica pilot and its continuation, and Blood & Chrome. Caprica’s pilot is separate so its 2009 publication can be represented without assigning that year to all the 2010 episodes.

It does not cover every webisode, documentary, theatrical episode re-edit, book or game. The Resistance, Razor Flashbacks and The Face of the Enemy are outside this first map. Parallel lanes indicate that one work revisits part of another’s period; they are not complete synchronisation. Check your edition’s contents and retain the spoiler notes when choosing chronological mode.
